White Sox option RHP Reynaldo Lopez to alternate training site

by Joe Binder

The battle for the fifth rotation spot appears to have reached its conclusion.

Following today’s 7-2 Spring Training win, the White Sox announced six roster moves. The most notable of the group was that of right-handed pitcher Reynaldo Lopez, who was optioned to the club’s alternate site. This means that Lopez will not be starting the season on the Major League roster, which is still a little surprising yet understandable given the circumstances.

Lopez struggled in camp, going 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in four appearances (11.0 IP/two starts). After showing some promise with two perfect innings in his first outing, the righty followed by giving up 11 earned runs and 16 hits over his remaining nine innings of work. His appearance yesterday was seemingly the nail in the coffin after surrendering four earned runs over three innings.

With the roster move, the starting rotation to begin the season has become clear. Barring any major developments between now and Opening Day, Tony La Russa and co. will roll with Lucas Giolito, Dallas Keuchel, Lance Lynn, Dylan Cease, and Carlos Rodon.

The White Sox now have a total of 36 players in Major League camp – 16 pitchers, four catchers, 10 infielders, and six outfielders. By the start of the season, the team will need to trim their roster down to 26.
