The White Sox could finally see some Major League depth added to their roster in the not-so distant future.
Outfielder Adam Engel told reporters this morning that he is set to begin a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights tomorrow.
Engel, 29, was originally forced to exit a late March spring training game after straining his right hamstring on an awkward throw. At the time, manager Tony La Russa said the outfielder would miss “at least a couple of weeks.” As we learned from Engel today, MRIs showed his original Grade 2 strain turned into a Grade 3 after a setback in his rehab tore the muscle off his tendon. Not ideal, especially given all of the subsequent injuries that rocked the team.
Once figured to be the fourth outfielder on this squad, Engel was heating up around the time of his first injury. In 36 at-bats across 14 spring training games, the righty was slashing .278/.278/.667 with three home runs, two triples, a double, and seven RBI. Assuming all goes well with his rehab, La Russa said he expects to pencil in Engel at centerfield, but also mentioned the team will keep an eye on his workload in the early going.
There’s no word yet on who will be the odd man out, though Billy Hamilton, Leury Garcia, and Jake Lamb will be some names to watch if Danny Mendick isn’t returned to Triple-A.
