UPDATE: The White Sox have made the following statement: “Right hip flexor strain for Luis Robert. X-rays are negative and he will be further evaluated tomorrow.”
While hardly definitive, this is one of the better scenarios considering what the injury could have been. Robert may still miss considerable time coming up, but we should know more about the severity of the injury once further tests are conducted tomorrow. At the very least, it looks like we avoided the worst of the worst.
This is the absolute last thing anyone wants to see right now, especially after the pectoral tendon injury to Eloy Jimenez in Spring Training.
Outfielder Luis Robert exited Sunday’s game against Cleveland with what appears to be a serious leg injury. As seen in the video below, Robert was beating out an infield single in the first inning when he pulled up right before touching first base. Shortly thereafter, the 23-year-old collapsed in pain and remained on the ground until attended to by the training staff.
Robert did attempt to walk off the field under his own power, but failed to put any weight on his right leg as he was helped by trainers. This was obviously a very concerning sight after all of the injures the team has suffered thus far.
The Gold Glove centerfielder came in to today’s game with a .309/.353/.457 slash, nine doubles, one home run, and eight runs driven in. A prolonged injury of any sort would be a huge blow to this team, after both Jimenez and Adam Engel have been forced to miss the first month of the season with their respective injuries. While Jimenez looks to be out for much of the season, Engel figures to make a return at some point this month.
We will update this article as the team makes more information available. Stay tuned!
