As the White Sox look to avoid their 21st straight loss, they’re turning to one of their young starting pitchers to help lead the way.
According to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, left-hander Ky Bush will be promoted from Triple-A Charlotte to start Monday night’s game in Oakland. No corresponding move is necessary with space available on the 40-man roster after the team’s deadline deals.
Bush, 24, was acquired from the Angels along with top catching prospect Edgar Quero in exchange for pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez. Currently ranked as the team’s sixth prospect by Baseball America and 17th by MLB Pipeline, Bush possesses a solid arsenal and projects as a back-end starter.
After a shaky 2023 campaign, the southpaw found success with Double-A Birmingham this season. He delivered a 2.12 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 80.2 innings to earn himself a promotion to Triple-A Charlotte. His first four appearances with the Knights haven’t been as memorable, however, as he owns a 6.16 ERA through 19 innings pitched. Combined between both levels, Bush’s ERA is still a solid 2.89 to go with a 10.45% walk rate and 23.4% strikeout rate.
As will be the case with many young starters the rest of the way, Bush will get his first chance to show what he can do against Major League competition. Given that Drew Thorpe is currently on the 10-day IL with a flexor strain, a solid outing tonight could earn Bush a few additional opportunities in the rotation. Other names to keep an eye on for starts over the next two months include Jake Eder, Jairo Iriarte, and Mason Adams.
