The White Sox announced on Friday that designated hitter Eloy Jimenez is headed to the 10-day IL (retroactive to April 2) with a left adductor strain. As part of the corresponding moves, the team selected the contract of outfielder Robbie Grossman from Triple-A Charlotte and designated right-hander Alex Speas for assignment.
Jimenez’s latest injury occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning of Sunday’s game on a ground out to third base. Replays showed Jimenez grimace as he pulled up about midway through his stride toward first. He then gingerly made his way back to the dugout before being replaced by Gavin Sheets later in the game.
Unfortunately, this is nothing new for the left fielder turned designated hitter. Jimenez has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, notably, missing time last season with a “low-grade hamstring strain” on April 4th. He was also sidelined for several weeks after an appendectomy in early May.
For those unfamiliar with the adductor, it’s a group of muscles that extend from the pelvic bone down to the inner thigh and knee. It’s an injury similar to one Jimenez suffered in Triple-A back in 2018, where he missed approximately two weeks with a strain. After missing the past three games, it seems likely that Eloy did not make enough positive progress to avoid an IL stint.
Grossman, who signed as a minor-league free agent on March 22, is 4-for-10 (.400) with two home runs and five RBI in three games with Charlotte. The 34-year-old spent the entire 2023 season with the World Series-winning Texas Rangers and hit .238 (84-for-353) with 23 doubles, 10 homers, 49 RBI, and 56 runs scored over 115 games.
As for Speas, the 26-year-old has thrown 2.1 scoreless IP with two strikeouts over two relief appearances with Charlotte this season. The White Sox claimed him off waivers from Texas back on October 3, 2023.
