The White Sox injury carousel begins again.
Prior to the first game of today’s doubleheader, the White Sox announced that they placed RHP Joe Kelly on the Injured List with right elbow inflammation. Nicholas Padilla will take his spot on the roster, but Jimmy Lambert will also be joining the team as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader.
This IL stint will be Kelly’s second of this season. He was placed on the 15-day IL on April 9th due to a right groin strain.
Outside of losing a bullpen arm, an area the White Sox are already thin at, this injury puts Joe Kelly’s trade value in doubt. Recently USA Today’s Bob Nightengale stated on the White Sox Talk podcast that the Sox could trade as many as six players before the MLB Trade Deadline, with Joe Kelly being named as one of the six. Though now, an IL stint for Kelly may put that in jeopardy.
On the season, Joe Kelly, 35, has a 4.82 ERA and 37 strikeouts versus 10 walks in 28.0 innings pitched. Padilla, who will join the team once again, has thrown 3.2 innings this season in the big leagues, giving up two runs while striking out five. He has a 4.08 ERA in 28.2 innings with the Charlotte Knights this season as well.
