The White Sox’ starting rotation has now lost its second member until the All-Star Break.
Today, the White Sox announced three roster moves, one of which is that starting pitcher Michael Kopech is heading to the 15-day IL.
All three moves include:
- Michael Kopech to the IL with right shoulder inflammation
- Selecting the contract of RHP Bryan Shaw from Triple-A Charlotte
- Transferring Romy Gonzalez from the 15 Day IL to the 60 Day IL with right shoulder inflammation
The White Sox are clearly far more concerned about Romy Gonzalez’s injury than Kopech’s, given the similarity in injuries yet the difference in time designations. Grifol also mentioned that Kopech would start one of the first five games after the All-Star Break, so this could be a sort of “fake IL” stint to give Kopech some rest.
Gonzalez, on the other hand, may be headed for surgery with his injury designation. In 44 games this season, the 26-year-old was hitting .194/.208/.376 while playing various positions for the White Sox. The emergence of Zach Remillard has made Gonzalez a bit more expendable, so the White Sox will likely take their time in easing Gonzalez back into things.
This year for the Charlotte Knights, in 22.1 IP, Bryan Shaw is 2-0 with a 4.03 ERA and 24 strikeouts compared to 14 walks. He has a long major league career under his belt, including several seasons for the Cleveland Guardians and Colorado Rockies. Selecting a reliever to fill the spot of a starter likely means that both Touki Toussaint and Jesse Scholtens are likely to see more of a workload leading up to the break in mid-July.
