Cue up “Another Bites the Dust” by Queen.
Prior to the second game of today’s split doubleheader in Boston, the White Sox announced they have placed right-handed starting pitcher Lance Lynn on the 10-day injured list with a strained right trapezius. For those keeping track, the move is retroactive to April 17th.
Lynn, the offseason’s big acquisition, has made his presence felt immediately in the starting rotation. He currently has a 1-1 record with an 0.92 ERA (2 ER/19.2 IP) with one shutout and complete game, 27 strikeouts, and a 0.92 WHIP over three starts. He also did not allow an earned run over his first 18.2 innings pitched, sprinkling in back-to-back starts that featured 10-plus strikeouts with zero walks. A loss like this, even for a week, is an extremely tough break for the team.
As when Dylan Cease was placed on the injured list a few days ago, the White Sox have recalled RHP Zack Burdi from the Schaumburg training facility. The organization’s No. 14 prospect, Burdi, will be another arm available out of the bullpen, if needed, despite posting some rough numbers last season and during spring training.
In terms of the starting rotation, we are already getting prepared for Michael Kopech’s first start since 2018 here in Sunday’s second game. While many would like to see him get another chance during Lynn’s absence, options like Reynaldo Lopez and Jonathan Stiever might be more likely for Wednesday in Cleveland given the timing of everything. On the bright side, some upcoming off days could play in the rotation’s favor, especially if Lynn only has to miss one start.
