White Sox rank third nationally in Lids’ gear sales

by Joe Binder

Despite an underwhelming performance this past season, the White Sox saw no shortage of gear purchases by fans.

Lids, an American retailer specializing in athletic headwear, released its list of top-selling MLB gear for the 2022 season, and the White Sox ranked third nationally. Only the Yankees and Dodgers recorded more sales, while the Braves, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Astros, Padres, Pirates, and Giants all followed.

Looking at the demographics more closely, the White Sox also claimed bragging rights over the Cubs as they were the top seller in the State of Illinois. This news isn’t particularly shocking and isn’t solely driven by on-field results either.

The White Sox have long been top merch sellers since they introduced their current logo in 1991. The clean and simple “Sox” script on a black cap has become popular outside of just the baseball community. As our very own Adam Kaplan explored in an article, the look was immediately embraced by West Coast Hip Hop Culture, specifically N.W.A. and Dr. Dre. Many artists and celebrities still sport the look to this day, helping drive sales beyond the diamond.

I find that hard to believe…. I have not bought any new Sox gear for over 10-years. And, I won’t as long as Reinsdorf stands to benefit. I will give another dime until there is new ownership.
