Prior to tonight’s series opener at Tampa Bay, the White Sox got busy and announced the following six roster moves:
· Placed RHP Vince Velasquez on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 31) with a left groin strain;
· Returned RHPs Kyle Crick and Jimmy Lambert to Triple-A Charlotte;
· Recalled RHP Davis Martin from Charlotte;
· Reinstated RHPs Dylan Cease and Kendall Graveman from the Restricted List.
Martin, who will start tonight’s game, made his MLB debut in the second game of a doubleheader on May 17th at Kansas City. Though he suffered the loss, he allowed just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts over five innings. In the minors, the 25-year-old is 5-2 with a 3.80 ERA (19 ER/45.0 IP) and 49 strikeouts in nine combined starts between Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham in the early going.
In addition, the other noteworthy moves center around Cease and Graveman, who return from the Restricted List after not being able to travel out of the country. So far this season, Cease has gone 4-2 with a 3.69 ERA (22 ER/53.2 IP) and 76 strikeouts over 10 starts in 2022. Likewise, Graveman currently owns a 1-1 record with a 2.78 ERA (7 ER/22.2 IP), 19 strikeouts, two saves and 10 holds this season, his first with the White Sox. Both will most certainly be welcomed back into the fold, especially at this crucial point in the schedule.
As for Velasquez, tonight’s originally scheduled starter will now miss at least the next two weeks with a left groin strain. He currently owns a rather uninspiring 2-3 record with a 5.30 ERA (21 ER/35.2 IP) and 33 strikeouts in eight appearances (seven starts) in 2022. During his absence, fans can expect to see Martin get numerous opportunities to finally prove himself and potentially become a longer-term fixture of the rotation.
