White Sox recall Jonathan Cannon, DFA Jake Woodford

by Jordan Lazowski

This afternoon, the White Sox announced that Jonathan Cannon would return to the big league club. In a corresponding move, the White Sox designated Jake Woodford for assignment. Woodford was on the mound for Thursday night’s record-breaking 14th consecutive loss of the season for the White Sox, and he gave up seven runs in just four innings of work, raising his ERA to 10.80 in the process.

Cannon, 23, had a rocky start to his major league career, going 0-1 with a 7.24 ERA in three starts (13.2 innings pitched). The right-hander has also struggled since his return to the minors, going 2-3 with a 6.43 ERA across six starts. He has given up four or more runs in four of those six starts. However, he is a far more intriguing player to watch throughout the rest of this season than many of the veterans that have been starting for the White Sox this season.

Designating Jake Woodford for assignment leaves an open spot on the 40-man roster, which is likely to be filled by Rule 5 pick Shane Drohan, who is nearing the end of his rehab assignment in Charlotte. Selected from the Red Sox in this year’s Rule 5 Draft, the 25-year-old has struggled in his rehab stints this season, most recently posting a 9.00 ERA in just four innings with Charlotte.
