White Sox reinstate Mike Clevinger in trio of roster moves

by Joe Binder

Pitching help is on the way.

In an afternoon press release, the White Sox announced they have reinstated starting pitcher Mike Clevinger from the 15-day injured list after nearly a month and a half absence. Right-handed pitchers Edgar Navarro and Bryan Shaw were also selected from Triple-A Charlotte.

Clevinger, who is scheduled to start tonight’s game, has been on the injured list since June 15 with right biceps inflammation. The 32-year-old is 3-4 with a 3.88 ERA (27 ER/62.2 IP) and 53 strikeouts over 12 starts this season, his first with White Sox. With the starting rotation now without Lucas Giolito and Lance Lynn, Clevinger will be crucial to eating innings for the remainder of the season if he sticks around post-deadline.

Navarro, 25, was originally signed by the Sox as an international free agent on March 10, 2018. On the season, he’s 3-1 with a 3.32 ERA (16 ER/43.1 IP), .214 opponents average, two saves, and 39 strikeouts over 35 combined relief appearances between Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham. A 6-foot-1, 245-pound native of Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, Navarro is limiting right-handers to a .156 (15-for-96) average between the two stops. Like the recently promoted Declan Cronin, Navarro has no major-league experience.

Shaw, 35, was designated for assignment on July 22 and outrighted to Charlotte on July 24 after going 0-0 with a 9.39 ERA (8 ER/7.2 IP) in six relief appearances with Chicago. He will hope for some better success this second time around as he has a chance to gain job security for the rest of the season.

Following the moves, the White Sox active roster increases to 26 and the 40-man roster to 38.
