White Sox reinstate outfielder Trayce Thompson

by Joe Binder

You know what they say – the third time’s the charm.

Prior to today’s series finale at the Texas Rangers, the White Sox announced that they have returned outfielder Trayce Thompson from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte and reinstated him from the 60-day injured list.

Thompson, who was acquired with pitchers Nick Nastrini and Jordan Leasure from the Dodgers, is no stranger to the organization. He originally was selected by the White Sox in the second round of the 2009 draft and has appeared in a combined 92 games with the club in 2015 and 2018. During that span, he hit .206/.265/.374 with eight homers and 25 driven in.

The 32-year-old hasn’t seen much action lately, as he was placed on the injured list on June 4 with a strained left oblique. When healthy, Thompson slashed .155/.310/.366 (11-for-72) with five home runs, 14 RBI and 12 runs scored over 36 games with the Dodgers this season.

Following the move, the White Sox 40-man roster increases to 38.

Can he bunt? Can he retire the side with less than 15 pitches? If not, why is occupying a spot on the roster?

Great… another OF that cannot hit or has good defense. He’ll fit right in.
