Prior to tonight’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, the White Sox announced a pair of roster moves.
Shortstop Tim Anderson has been returned from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte and reinstated from the injured list. Meanwhile, third baseman Yoan Moncada was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to 6/18) with a strained right hamstring.
As you may recall, Anderson originally injured himself when fielding a ground ball on May 29 against the Cubs. He left the game in pain and was later placed on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 right groin strain, avoiding a significant injury that would result in a prolonged absence.
Prior to his stint on the IL, Anderson was the team’s offensive catalyst with an impressive .356/.393/.503 slash to go along with nine doubles, five home runs, 19 RBIs, and eight stolen bases over 40 games this season. He just recently completed a four-game rehab assignment with the Charlotte Knights last week, going 5-for-15 (.333) with one RBI. He is currently slotted in the leadoff spot and will play shortstop tonight.
Moncada, 26, suffered the injury on Friday at Houston. He is batting .179/.230/.292 (19-106) with three home runs and 12 RBI this season. In his last full game before the injury, Moncada went 5-for-6 with a double, home run, and five RBI on June 15 at Detroit.
For now, it appears the team will continue to rely on Jake Burger, Leury Garcia, Josh Harrison, and Danny Mendick to get reps at the hot corner. Infielder Yolbert Sanchez could also be a potential option at the Triple-A level, though it doesn’t seem as though he will get an opportunity unless this turns into a prolonged absence and additional room is made on the roster.
