The White Sox bullpen will be down a potential arm for the remainder of the 2023 campaign.
The team announced on Friday that right-handed reliever Matt Foster underwent successful Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the season. The 28-year-old was first placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right flexor strain and was transferred to the 60-day last week.
Foster burst onto the scene in 2020 with a dominant debut campaign where he was 6-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 28.2 innings. Ever since then, he’s been up and down between Chicago and Charlotte as he’s failed to recapture the magic. Between the past two years in the majors, he’s registered a combined 5.14 ERA in 84 innings with a diminished strikeout rate of 22.3%.
Given the typical Tommy John recovery time of 14 to 18 months, it’s likely we will not see Foster back in action until, at least, mid-2024. He’ll accumulate a full year of service time while on the injured list, which will officially qualify him for arbitration for the first time in the coming offseason.
