The wait is over. The White Sox have purchased the contract of second baseman Nick Madrigal from the Schaumburg training facility for this weekend’s series against the Kansas City Royals, per a release from the team.
Madrigal, 23, slashed .311/.377/.414 with 27 doubles, five triples, four home runs, 55 RBI, and 35 stolen bases across 120 games between the Low-A Kannapolis Intimidators, High-A Winston-Salem Dash, Double-A Birmingham Barons, and Triple-A Charlotte Knights. He is also currently penciled in as the nine-hitter in tonight’s game and will be wearing uniform number one.
The 2018 first-rounder, Madrigal, missed out on making the Opening Day roster a week ago with service time undoubtedly playing a key role in the organization’s decision. Now that the necessary period has passed for the team to gain an extra year of control, Madrigal will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2026 season.
In a corresponding roster move, the White Sox announced that reliever Kelvin Herrera has been designated for assignment. The 30-year old right-hander made just two appearances with the team this season.
Happy Madrigal Day, everybody!
