The White Sox have reportedly added a familiar face to their organization.
According to the White Sox’ transaction page, the club has signed Alex Colomé to a deal and assigned him to their Arizona Complex League team (ACL White Sox). This move was also confirmed by MLB.com White Sox beat writer Scott Merkin, who tweeted out the news not too long ago.
Colomé, 34, originally signed with the Rays as an international free agent in 2007. He made his major league debut with the Rays in 2013 and spent six seasons with the club before being traded to Seattle during the 2018 season. Colomé then went on to spend a few seasons in the organization with the White Sox after being traded from the Mariners in exchange for Omar Narvaez in the 2018-2019 offseason. He served as the team’s closer before Liam Hendriks, going 6-5 with a 2.27 ERA and 42 saves in 83.1 innings on the South Side. The White Sox let him walk following the 2020 season.
However, Colomé’s time beyond the South Side hasn’t been as fruitful. He posted a 4.15 ERA with the Twins in 2021 and a 5.74 ERA with the Rockies in 2022. He signed a minor league deal with the Nationals this offseason but was released after not making the club after a rough Spring Training (5.59 ERA in 9.2 innings).
With Colomé, the White Sox are looking purely at a depth option with a player that is familiar with the organization. Through extended Spring Training, the team will hope to get his cutter/fastball combination back to where it was during his solid days on the South Side, but until then, Colomé likely has a long way to go before seeing any meaningful innings with the White Sox this season.
