While the major league free agent frenzy will continue to await the result of the lockout, the White Sox have continued to do some minor league shopping.
According to MiLB Transactions on Twitter, the White Sox have signed free agent RHP Matthew McGarry to a minor league deal.
McGarry, 24, had an interesting college career. Originally a Vanderbilt student-athlete and the 2015 Player of the Year in the Peninsula Athletic League, McGarry made two starts in seven appearances as a true freshman, going 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA. His second season didn’t go as well, and in two seasons with Vanderbilt, he posted a 5.50 ERA. McGarry would then transfer to Santa Clara, where he threw 46 innings across three seasons, going 0-5 with a 7.83 ERA.
McGarry has been a high-strikeout, high-walk player throughout his career – though his walks have easily been the part of his game that have hurt him the most.
However, it’s clear there is something the White Sox see in McGarry – something that caused him to be scouted by Vanderbilt in the first place. Upon signing with the White Sox, he was assigned to the Arizona Complex League, where he will begin his professional career in 2022.

Also of note, he’s the brother of former UVA pitcher and Phillies prospect Griff McGarry. The Sox could have a steal here as he’s got great stuff, high 90’s fastball, just needs to reign it in and get some top coaching.
