Another day means another signing.
According to Aram Leighton of Just Baseball, infielder Nick Maton has agreed to a minor league contract with the White Sox. The deal, which includes an invite to Major League camp, is the second made by the team this week.
Maton, 27, appeared in five games for the Orioles in 2024 though spent the majority of his time with the team’s Triple-A affiliate. In 344 plate appearances for the Norfolk Tides, he slashed .258/.363/.471 with an .834 OPS, 117 wRC+, 16 homers, and 56 RBI. Maton elected free agency at the start of the offseason, ending his stint as non-roster infield depth.
Originally drafted by the Phillies in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Maton was traded to the Tigers as part of the return for left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto. In four major league seasons, the versatile infielder has hit .205/.303/.357 with a -0.4 fWAR over 184 games. His brief tenure with Baltimore aside, Maton previously appeared in a career-high 93 games with the Tigers in 2023, though he struggled offensively and defensively to finish with a -1.0 fWAR.

Given Maton’s connection to the Orioles, this signing has Ryan Fuller’s name all over it. The White Sox’s new Director of Hitting is likely very familiar with Maton’s game and will get to work with him once again this spring. While it’s possible Maton could appear in the majors at some point in 2025, he figures to otherwise serve as infield depth down at Triple-A Charlotte.
