White Sox to promote infield prospect Brooks Baldwin

by Joe Binder

In a somewhat surprising move, the White Sox are calling up one of their intriguing prospects.

According to the Sun-Times’ Daryl Van Schouwen, the organization is promoting infielder Brooks Baldwin from Triple-A Charlotte. The Sox have not yet made the move official as of this article.

Baldwin, 23, has spent the majority of his season with Double-A Birmingham before getting the call to Charlotte just earlier this month. Ranked as the team’s No. 23 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Baldwin is currently hitting .324/.391/.460 eight homers, 41 RBI, and an .851 OPS between both levels. In just 35 plate appearances with the Knights, he has 10 hits and four driven in.

After making several roster moves over the last few days, including designating Martin Maldonado and promoting catcher Chuckie Robinson from Triple-A, the White Sox had one open spot on their 40-man roster. With Brooks Baldwin, they are adding a versatile position player who can play anywhere on the infield and has even spent some time playing left field. Most evaluators agree that his best position is second base, although he can handle shortstop just fine as well. This promotion should provide him with an extensive opportunity to solidify himself in the White Sox lineup long-term.

This guy is super intense, he is the opposite of Broken Elroy.

This call up is too early in my opinion. He has only had 6 games at AAA. And, you are exposing him to Pedro Gri-Fail. Yes, it is time to bring up some of the kids… but they do not have the right management / coaching staff in place at the MLB level.

This is sure fire recipe for failure.
