The White Sox are reportedly promoting their top pitching prospect, according to Chase Ford of MiLB Central.
Schultz, ranked as the #2 prospect in the White Sox system, and #40 overall (MLB Pipeline), has a 3.95 ERA in 27.1 IP over seven starts so far this season in High-A. The former first-round pick has been limited to starting once a week in an effort to monitor his workload, but he’s quickly emerged as the potential future ace of the White Sox staff. Over 10 starts in 2023, Schultz held opposing hitters to a 1.75 batting average and put up a minuscule 1.33 ERA with Low-A Kannapolis.
It remains to be seen where his innings limit sits for this season, but there’s no reason to believe he can’t handle the upper levels of the minor leagues with his excellent stuff.
Assuming Schultz stays on schedule, he’ll line up to make his AA debut on Saturday evening in Biloxi.
The White Sox haven’t made this move official, so there is no corresponding move just yet. However, according to James Fegan, White Sox fans should expect a little bit of shuffling among their major league members, including promoting Nick Nastrini back to the majors and designating Brad Keller for assignment.
Nastrini made his major league debut earlier this season and has posted a 5.24 ERA since re-joining the club. However, his last three starts have been much stronger than his first one, posting a 2.89 ERA across those 18.2 innings.
