The White Sox were busy up until the end.
As first reported by Jeff Passan, the White Sox have traded outfielder/designated hitter Eloy Jimenez to the Orioles. In return, left-handed relief pitcher Trey McGough is heading back to Chicago.
Jimenez, 27, never lived up to the lofty expectations that came with being a top prospect. After battling a litany of injuries throughout his MLB career, he left much to be desired as a middle-of-the-order power bat. On the season, Eloy slashed .240/.297/.345. with five home runs, .642 OPS, and an 80 wRC+ over 65 games. With the move, the White Sox unload what has turned out to be a bigger headache than a productive staple of their lineup.
In return, along with clearing Jimenez’s contract off their books, the White Sox will receive left-handed relief pitcher Trey McGough. At 26 years old, McGough has yet to make his MLB debut. He has been solid for the Orioles Triple-A affiliate this season, however, holding a 2.08 ERA through 34.2 innings at the level. Expanding out just a bit, the southpaw is 2-0 with a 1.99 ERA, 0.994 WHIP, and 9.1 K/9 through 54.1 innings thrown between both the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
This deal was just one in a flurry of moves for the White Sox on the final day leading up to the deadline. In addition to Jimenez, shortstop Paul DeJong has been traded to the Royals and reliever Tanner Banks was dealt to the Phillies. Meanwhile, the team’s biggest asset, Garrett Crochet, will not be traded.
