White Sox Update – December 7, 2018

by Joe Binder

With the weekend finally upon us, here’s a look at the latest Chicago White Sox news and rumors:

      • Jim Bowden of The Athletic released a list of teams on Twitter who are “in” on Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto. The teams who appear to be the most aggressive are the Mets, Phillies, Padres, Braves, and Rays. Other teams who have shown interest but are not as aggressive include the White Sox, Dodgers, Rockies, Brewers, and Astros.
      • This could be an interesting move for the Sox since they recently traded away Omar Narvaez, leaving Welington Castillo as the only catcher with Major League experience on the 40-man roster. However, while Realmuto would be a big upgrade behind the plate, the asking price would likely be pretty steep. Also, Seby Zavala and Zack Collins are projected to make their MLB debuts in 2019, giving the White Sox some options and flexibility.
      • Tim Kurkjian of ESPN released a list of the top 3 teams in the Bryce Harper sweepstakes. The Phillies were first, the Dodgers were second, and the White Sox were third.
      • Washington Nationals managing principal owner Mark Lerner released some pretty hefty information regarding the team’s chances of resigning Harper. In an interview with 106.7 The Fan, Lerner said, “Well, when we met with them and we gave them the offer, we told them, ‘This is the best we can do.’ We went right to the finish line very quickly. And we said, ‘If this is of interest to you, please come back to us and we’ll see whether we can finish it up.’ But we just couldn’t afford to put more than that in and still be able to put a team together that had a chance to win the NL East or go farther than that.”
      • This is significant news for the White Sox since it appeared that the Nationals were going to remain a major contender for Harper this offseason. Now with Washington essentially ready to move on, this leaves Los Angeles and Philadelphia as the two other frontrunners along with the White Sox.
      • Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated commented on the possibility of Bryce Harper joining the White Sox with Chris Russo on MLB Network:
      • The White Sox announced changes to the Major League Athletic Training staff on Friday afternoon. Mike Reinold will take over as the Senior Medical Advisor while Brian Ball, Brett Walker, and James Kruk all received promotions. Here’s the full statement from the White Sox:
