White Sox Update: Five roster moves, Hernandez’ option declined, Hahn presser

by Joe Binder

Before we head into the first weekend of November, the White Sox decided to turn a lazy Friday into an eventful one thanks to a little news dump and Rick Hahn press conference.

Starting with transactions, the organization announced the five following roster moves:

  • Outrighted Jimmy Cordero (RHP), Evan Marshall (RHP), Jace Fry (LHP), and Brian Goodwin (OF) to Triple-A Charlotte
  • Purchased the contract of Anderson Severino (LHP) from Triple-A Charlotte.

It’s important to note that along with the above moves, all four optioned players will now become free agents – bringing the 40-man roster down to 34 heading into the offseason. Other players who became free agents earlier this week include Carlos Rodon, Leury Garcia, Ryan Tepera, and Billy Hamilton.

On top of this, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports that the White Sox will decline their $6 million club option on second baseman Cesar Hernandez. There’s no buyout as part of the option, leaving Hernandez to also become a free agent once the move is made official.

Last season, the White Sox acquired Hernandez to replace the injured and later traded Nick Madrigal up the middle. Unfortunately, the second baseman’s production never really transferred over from Cleveland to Chicago, as he posted one of his worst offensive seasons since 2014.

The decision to move away from Hernandez likely signals the team’s desire to find a more solid option at second base, especially as the rest of the AL Central looks to start reloading. Our Adam Kaplan included some of those options in two of his most recent articles, which can be viewed at the links below:

Turning things over to today’s Rick Hahn press conference, here’s a stream of tweets from the beat writers.
