- Palka, Anderson, and Renteria spoke with the media at the afternoon event. Here’s what they had to say:
Palka to the kids, explaining his job: “The most important thing about playing outfield is you have to be the best looking player. That’s why they put me in the outfield as soon as I got there.”

Renteria: “I don’t know we are up against the wall. I think that the plan is to make sure that once we put our feet on the ground there and start moving forward, everything will be pretty settled. But the game of baseball doesn’t necessarily guarantee settled.”
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) January 23, 2019
Renteria on Machado meeting: “It was a great meeting, great young man. We expressed our interest. We talked about what we are as an organization. And we looked forward, you just don’t yet where things will fall. I thought it was a very positive meeting for all parties involved.”
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) January 23, 2019
Renteria on adding Alonso, Jay: “They in themselves speak for themselves in terms of their talent. That they happen to be friends of Manny just happens to be there. These are two quality Major League players.”
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) January 23, 2019
Renteria on the fun of a surprise SoxFest announcement: “It would be fun, but not that I’m aware of.”
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) January 23, 2019
One more from Renteria on Macado meeting: “Rick and the front office put a great presentation together for them. It was very detailed. I would say this: If I was on the other side, I would have been very, very impressed.”
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) January 23, 2019
Anderson on if there’s such a thing as having too many great players on the White Sox: “No, you can’t. What’s wrong with having everybody being great?”
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) January 23, 2019
Anderson on if the White Sox adding Machado could change the IF dynamics for him: “I can’t say, I’m here for them. However they want to use me. I’m just here to win championships, however they want to use me. I’m just here to play and have fun.”
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) January 23, 2019
But Anderson, rightfully so, very confident in his own ability at shortstop: “I see myself at shortstop and it’s going to be tough to kind of move me. I put in a lot of work to get where I am today.”
