The day started on a positive note with Dallas Keuchel, Tim Anderson, and Jose Abreu highlighting the team’s intrasquad scrimmages. Then, things took more of an undesirable turn. Here’s the latest news, notes, tweets, and quotes, from the final day of the workweek.
Kopech opts to sit out the 2020 season
General manager Rick Hahn announced that top pitching prospect Michael Kopech has decided he will not participate in the 2020 season. Here’s a brief statement on that matter that was posted to the team’s Twitter:
Kopech notably missed the first week of Summer Camp workouts due to an undisclosed personal matter. For more on this topic, check out this article published earlier this evening.
Moncada, Ruiz heading to IL
Third baseman Yoan Moncada and right-handed pitcher Jose Ruiz are headed to the 10-day injured list, per the team.
Both players have been absent from the entirety of the Summer Camp workouts to date. Placement on the injured list now means that the pair will be sidelined until at least July 20th, which is the Monday before the season. Specific information on the players’ injuries has not been made public.
The team does have two players, who wished to remain anonymous, in isolation following asymptomatic positive COVID-19 test results. Neither Moncada nor Ruiz has been directly named as being one of those being affected, however.
Keuchel throws spotless intrasquad scrimmage debut
Dallas Keuchel threw 2.1 perfect innings in this afternoon’s intrasquad scrimmage. The lefty didn’t allow any baserunners, struck out three, and faced an even faced extra batter in his second inning of work due to a low pitch count.
Also making some noise were Tim Anderson and Jose Abreu. Both players homered as the “home team” took the contest 3-0. For a game log, click here.
Joe McEwing’s Friday Round-up
With manager Rick Renteria away from the team to attend a family funeral, bench coach Joe McEwing has taken over his duties and met with the media following the scrimmages.
Ruiz, of course, was placed on the injured list a short time after this interview.

Fans had the opportunity to have their likeness appear on a cardboard cutout for just $49, with all proceeds benefitting White Sox Charities. It’s not yet known whether the team will continue this offer for additional homestands, as this was only for the opening series against Minnesota.
