White Sox Update: Manager Search, Crochet, Premier12, AFL

by Joe Binder

Happy Monday, White Sox fans!

As the work week gets underway, let’s take a look at the latest news, notes, and anecdotes from around the organization.

Garrett Crochet named a finalist for AL Comeback Player of the Year

Finalists have been announced for the 2024 Players Choice Awards, and White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet is in the mix for AL Comeback Player of the Year. Joining him as the two other candidates are right-handed pitcher Chad Green of the Blue Jays and outfielder Tyler O’Neill of the Red Sox.

Two White Sox players competing for Team USA in the Premier12

White Sox prospects Eric Adler (RHP) and Tim Elko (1B) will be competing for Team USA in the upcoming Premier12 tournament. Rosters were unveiled on Monday afternoon, with former Chicago pitchers Dylan Covey and Touki Toussaint also joining the team.

Elsewhere, third baseman Yoan Moncada is set to participate for Team Cuba in the games. He will reportedly join players from his home country this week in South Korea to prepare.

Colson Montgomery off to hot start in Arizona Fall League.

White Sox top prospect Colson Montgomery is among those competing in the Arizona Fall League and has been impressive early. The infielder is currently hitting .400/.613/.650 (8-for-20) with two doubles, one homer, seven RBI, four stolen bases, and a 1.263 OPS through his first eight games.

Will Venable, George Lombard have interviewed for White Sox manager job

According to 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine, coaches Will Venable and George Lombard have already interviewed for the White Sox manager job. This comes after the two were publicly linked to the opening last week, though it was unknown where either stood in the process.

This is particularly notable for Venable, who declined an interview with the Mets for their opening last October due to “comfort with his situation. ” It would appear that he’s now reconsidering his options ahead of 2025, making him an intriguing name to watch in this process.

More detailed write-ups can be found for Lombard (here) and Venable (here).

With the World Series not being played until Friday, the White Sox have several off days to conduct interviews with candidates from the participating organizations. GM Chris Getz originally stated that he would like a hire in place by the first week in November, which could lead to a decision coming sooner rather than later. Is it possible for the team to have a new skipper in place by the end of the week?

Chicago Sports Network releases statement on viewership options

Though it doesn’t impact our White Sox viewing experience (yet), Chicago Sports Network has gotten off to a rocky start with its distribution of Blackhawks and Bulls games.

In a recent statement, CHSN revealed they have been formally negotiating with Xfinity/Comcast for months and have even proposed a “substantial reduction in total fees” for the network to get carried. President Joe Coyle told reporters the other day that Xfinity/Comcast has not even proposed a single offer, leaving the network hanging as they try to strike deals beyond the ones with DIRECTV, DIRECTV STREAM, U-verse, Astound/RCN, and other smaller providers.

We will continue to monitor the situation, like many of you, to see how things play out through the remainder of the year.

Officials revealed the University of Illinois’ $300 million technology and research hub, “Discovery Partners Institute,” will not happen at the 62-acre South Loop location known as The 78. Now, property owner Related Midwest has presented the idea that the Chicago Fire Football Club, which currently plays at Soldier Field, join the White Sox by constructing a new stadium at the site instead.

Give its proximity to downtown, adjacency to the river and flexibility to accomodate a wide range of uses, The 78 stands alone in its ability to house large institutions that want to plant their flag in the heart of Chicago. We are actively exploring the co-location of dual stadiums for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Fire, two organizations whose presence at The 78 would align with our vision of creating Chicago’s next great neighborhood.
