White Sox Update: Reinsdorf, The 78, Rosenthal, Passan

by Jordan Lazowski

It’s been quite a week of headlines for the White Sox off-the-field. Just this week, there have been three articles related to the team’s trek towards 120 losses and those responsible for the results. Beyond that, the White Sox have actually won a few games recently, but not enough to keep them off of their trajectory to being the worst baseball team in modern history.

While there are some comments around the latest with The 78 Project, much of this article is meant to catch you up on many of the important pieces this week regarding this season. Make sure to catch up with all of it below.

Rosenthal/Ghiroli shine light into the inner workings of White Sox organization

Let’s start with this week’s biggest article. This morning, Ken Rosenthal and Britt Ghiroli published an article in The Athletic that illuminates an organization in disarray.

Things highlighted in the article include the following – none of which is necessarily new information for White Sox fans who have been paying close attention:

  • The team’s outdated charter plane that had veterans confused when they joined the team.
  • The front office’s “huge conflict” over analytics.
  • The hiring of Tony La Russa.
  • The team’s work to rectify some of the disarray.

At the center of the article is Jerry Reinsdorf’s involvement with it all, and the article apparently struck a nerve within the organization. According to Barstool Sports’ Dave Williams (White Sox Dave), Reinsdorf will be having a meeting with the front office in regards to the article.

Now, not all of the content is bad. Chris Getz comes off as rather knowledgeable about the team’s problems and has a path toward trying to fix them. But, that’s about the only positive thing that can be said about the state of the organization from those familiar with its inner workings. It’s worth a read for all fans.

Passan details the human element of being a player on a historically bad team

Jeff Passan didn’t miss a chance to write about the White Sox’s historic quest toward 120+ losses, but did so from a more player-friendly angle. In his latest piece, he explored how the players have been dealing with the season, focusing less on how the team came to be and more on the humans behind the soon-to-be historic team.

Morrissey provides fan angle to the grind of the 2024 season

With Rosenthal, Ghiroli, and Passan taking care of the players and ownership, it’s only fair that someone discusses this season from the viewpoint of fans. Rick Morrissey of the Sun-Times did just that, talking with fans in his latest column who “have seen enough” of a franchise that should be giving fans more than they’ve gotten.

“The 78” development impresses, but public funding remains a non-starter

Over the past few weeks, a baseball field had started to appear at “The 78” development in the South Loop. It was later figured out that the White Sox and Related Midwest – the site’s developer – had created the field to drum up interest in potential investors. While the site did impress, minds haven’t apparently been changed in regards to public funding, perhaps necessitating this display that was created in part by Roger Bossard.

Getting paid hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars to absolutely suck at your job..must be nice! The fans have it worst. We can’t just fly to Hawaii after the worst season in sports history and enjoy a 6 month paid vacation.
