White Sox Update: Saturday’s Pitchers, Getz, Hall, Anderson

by Joe Binder

The White Sox are just two days away from their first Spring Training game. As the team makes final preparations, here are some news and notes from around camp on Thursday.

Pitchers announced for Cactus League opener vs. Cubs

A day after naming Jared Shuster as Saturday’s starter, the White Sox listed the rest of the pitchers expected to throw in their Cactus League opener.

  • Jared Shuster (LHP)
  • Justin Dunn (RHP)
  • Steven Wilson (RHP)
  • Prelander Berroa (RHP)
  • Brandon Eisert (LHP)
  • Jonathan Heasley (RHP)
  • Dan Altavilla (RHP)

First pitch against the Cubs is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. CST.

Trades possible before Opening Day

After a slew of minor league signings in recent weeks, the White Sox might not be done trying to improve their roster.

“That’s a definite possibility,” Getz said of making trade between now and Opening Day. “First and foremost, you want to put together the best club you can for an upcoming season. Knowing that we’ve got some really talented players in camp that are going to be watched and tracked by other clubs, and if there’s an opportunity to improve our long-term health, we’re going to do that.”

Luis Robert Jr. is the undoubtedly team’s most attractive asset and could very well be unloaded in the next month, similar to Dylan Cease last year. Nothing is imminent at this time, however, and Getz will be keeping an eye on potential smaller moves as well.

Toby Hall named interim manager of Windy City Thunderbolts

Former catcher Toby Hall has been named the Windy City Thunderbolts’ interim manager in the absence of Bobby Jenks, who is battling Stage 4 stomach cancer. Hall, who played two of his nine major league seasons with the White Sox, was previously named a bench coach before Jenks’ diagnosis.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Bobby and his family during these incredibly difficult times,” said Windy City general manager Mike VerSchave. “Bobby could not wait for his second season to get going and we will miss his smile and always positive attitude at the ballpark this summer.  I know he will be watching the roster he constructed very closely from abroad as he battles this terrible disease.”
