White Sox Update: Yoan Moncada, Nomar Mazara, Ricky Renteria

by Joe Binder

I hope you’re all feeling well after those back-to-back exhibition wins over the North Siders. The Sox just had some live batting practice today before they return for their third and final exhibition against the Brewers tomorrow night at home. While we await that game, here’s the latest news, notes, tweets, and quotes from manager Ricky Renteria.

Moncada expected to be ready for Opening Day

In a Zoom call with reporters earlier today, Renteria said that he expects Yoan Moncada to start in Friday’s Opening Day game against the Twins.

Moncada, who missed the early portion of Summer Camp due to COVID-19, just recently rejoined the team and appeared in his first game action last night against the Cubs. The third baseman made a number of solid plays in the field while also going 1-for-3 with an RBI single in his first at-bat.

Mazara still “under the weather”

One player noticeably missing from the first pair of exhibition games was Nomar Mazara. When asked about the right fielder’s status, Renteria didn’t offer much.

If Mazara isn’t ready to go for Friday, it seems likely we’ll see either Leury Garcia or Adam Engel assume his role like we have the past two nights against the Cubs.

Renteria says 15-16 pitchers could make 30-man roster

With Opening Day fastly approaching, Rick Renteria and the White Sox coaching staff is in the process of determining who will make the 30-man roster. Moncada’s ability, or lack thereof, to play long stretches without a day off to begin the season is a factor in the process among other things. Here’s Renteria’s response:
