Coming into the 2020 season, the White Sox and Yankees were originally scheduled to play a game at the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, Iowa. Major League Baseball, is in fact, still planning on making this a reality on August 13th. However, with the realignment of the leagues and divisions to alter the season due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the Bronx Bombers will no longer be the team facing the South Siders. The new opponent, arguably the best NL team in the division, will be the St. Louis Cardinals, as first reported by 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine.
The other teams in consideration for taking the Yankees spot were the Reds, Brewers, and Cubs, with the Cubs likely being next in line. However, reports stated the league wanted to keep the Crosstown Classic matchups in, or around, Chicago.
I like this matchup at Field of Dreams for a multitude of reasons. One, these are a couple of the oldest teams in baseball, and it will feature a matchup of opponents who have both young talent to go along with veteran presence. Another reason, the teams’ logos fit this game so naturally. The old, 1917 White Sox logo, with the “O” and “X” within the curves of the “S,” while the Cardinals have something similar with the “S” and “T” blended together. Just perfect, old fashioned baseball logos to go along with two exciting teams taking part in an old-time event.
The Field of Dreams venue is being built to hold approximately 8,000 people, which sits in the middle of the Iowa cornfields. About 200 miles west of Chicago, it would be about a three and a half hour trip for White Sox fans. There has been no statement on whether or not fans will be allowed to attend, but Iowa has opened more things up than many other states, so it seems to be a possibility.
Plenty of additional information will likely be coming from the league over the next few days and weeks leading up to the game. Follow us on social media @SoxOn35th for more updates!
