Amid a season-long battle with back issues, Yoan Moncada is returning to the White Sox today.
Prior to tonight’s game against the Chicago Cubs, the White Sox announced three roster moves:
- Returned Yoan Moncada from his rehab assignment
- Optioned C Carlos Perez to AAA Charlotte
- Outrighted RHP Bryan Shaw to AAA Charlotte after being DFA’d earlier this week
The White Sox’ roster remains at a full 26 with a full 40-man roster.
In his most recent eight-game stint with Charlotte, Moncada hit .333/.375/.433 across 32 plate appearances and did not register a home run. The team’s third baseman has battled back issues since Spring Training, and during his most recent IL stint, Rick Hahn mentioned that the third baseman was dealing with a protruding disc – similar to the injuries Joe Crede dealt with throughout his career. After a hot start to the season in which he was hitting .314/.351/.500 as recently as May 21, Moncada has hit just .147/.206/.235 in his last 20 games. This corresponds with the time that fans started to see Yo really struggle to run out of the box and swing from the right side of the plate.
Hopefully, the continued time off will allow Moncada the ability to rest up and find some of his early-season success once again during the second half. It is unclear where both Moncada and Burger will fit in the lineup daily, though manager Pedro Grifol did allude to a willingness to explore playing Burger at second base occasionally.
Perez will return to Charlotte, still without many opportunities on the big league roster this season. The 26-year-old has two hits in 15 plate appearances this season and could potentially see some more playing time if the roster shakes up in the next week with the Trade Deadline.

So… we should expect it will be a week to 10-days before Moncada is back on the DL???
There is something seriously wrong with his back. And, it has effected his play the last few seasons. This reminds me of the issues Joe Crede had… His career was cut short due to the it.
